Eleven Religious Organizations Operating in Karabakh

According to Mr. Ashot Sargsyan, Director of the National Minorities and Religious Affairs Division of the NKR government, there are eleven religious organizations operating in Karabakh whose head offices have been registered in the RoA. The new NKR law on "Freedom of conscience and religious organizations", passed on January 9, 2009, sets forth a six-month deadline for all religious operating groups to register. The "Armenian Catholic Church of Artsakh" was duly registered on March 19, 2009. On January 24, 2009, representatives of the Jehovah's Witnesses went to the NKR government division mentioned above and received copies of the documents needed for filing however Mr. Sargsyan states that the completed forms have yet to be recievved by his office. Applications by the "NKR Christians of the Evangelical Faith" and the "Fire of Awakening" religious groups were refused official registration by Mr. Sargsyan's office. In an "Azat Artsakh" newspaper article, Mr. Sargsyan wrote that evidence existed that practioners of the "Fire of Awakening" group employed various psychological intimidation techniques which violated several NKR laws.
