Coalition Calls On ARF Not to Quit Parliamentary Committee Posts

President of the RoA National Assembly, Hovik Abrahamyan, made a public request at today's session of the parliament on behalf of the governing coalition that ARF members Armen Rustamyan and Artur Aghabekyan withdraw their resignations and continue in their posts as President of the National Assembly's Permanent Committee on Foreign Affairs and President of the National Assembly's Permanent Committee on National Security and Internal Affairs, respectively. Vahan Hovhannisyan, on behalf of the ARF, thanked Mr. Abrahamyan for making the request and stated that the proposal would be discussed and that a response would be forthcoming. The parliamentary speaker issued no statement regarding whether or not Hrayr Karapetyan would continue on as National Assembly vice-president. There have been precedents when parliamentary committees in the RoA National Assembly have been chaired by members of the opposition. The parliament drafted a resolution in 2008 that permitted opposition members to hold the posts of president and deputy president of parliamentary committees. These changes, however, will go into effect as of the next parliamentary session.
