Witnesses in Sasun Mikayelyan Case Allege Official "Foul Play"

Three witnesses in the criminal court case of Sasun Mikayelyan, convicted of organizing public disturbances and illegal arms possession and procurement surrounding the events of March 1-2, 2008, testified in court that illegal measures were used against them during the preliminary investigation to elicit testimony. The trial is underway at the Kotayk Regional Court. The witnesses that have come forth with these allegations are Arsen Mkrtchyan, Edik Khachatryan and Yasha Melkonyan. In particular, Yasha Melkonyan stated that Deputy Chief S. Markosyan of the Hrazdan Police Department used excessive force while transporting him to the station house. The other two witnesses stated that they were subjected to illegal questioning methods during the preliminary investigation. Given that the statements made by the three witnesses in the court relate to Article 341 of the RoA Criminal Code, the RoA General Prosecutor has initiated separate criminal cases regarding the allegations of misuse and directed the RoA State Security Service and the RoA Special Examination Service to conduct a preliminary investigation. The directive of the General Prosecutor calls for all possible measures to be enacted to uncover the facts of these statements made by the witnesses in order to come up with a set of necessary conclusions and judgments in as short a time as possible.
