Witness in Hakobyan Case Called to Testify at Arzumanian/Sirounyan Trial
The criminal trial of Alexander Arzumanian and Suren Sirounyan continued today at the Kentron and Nork-Marash District Court.
The court stated that the previous motion of defense lawyer Liparit Simonyan to have the video tapes and phone conversations examined by a body of experts couldn't take place before July 20 since the expert panel was presently backlogged and overworked.
Mr. Simonyan asked that the examination be conducted by another body of experts, since the July 20 date was unreasonable, or else the evidence should be thrown out. Both defendants also called for the evidence to be thrown out. The presiding judge then agreed to have another panel of experts examine the tapes and recorded phone conversations.
Samvel Gasbaryan, a witness in the case who had earlier testified that he had seen Levon Ter-Petrosyan near Myasnikian Statue on March 1, 2008, requested that he be afforded another opportunity to testify since he was displeased with ensuing press coverage that labelled him as being an "agent". Despite objections from the defense, the judge granted the request. As it turns out, Mr. Gasbaryan had nothing new to offer in terms of testimony relevant to the case.
Prosecutor Koryun Piloyan then motioned the court to allow for a new witness to testify in the case; a witness not previously registered in the Arzumanian and Sirounyan trial. The witness in question was Hrachik Atoyan, who had testified earlier today in the trial of Hakob Hakobyan.
The defense objected to the motion. Prosecutor Piloyan argued that Mr. Atoyan was one of the witness registered in the previous "March 1st Seven" case and that he has the right to subpoena Mr. Atoyan.
Defense lawyer Simonyan then asked the court for a recess of three hours in order to familiarize himself with the Mr. Atoyan's pre-trial testimony. The judge granted the lawyer one hour in which to prepare.
