Last night, there was another in a series of confrontations between supporters of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) and the Prosperous Party of Armenia (PPA). Both are members in the ruling government coalition but are fielding separate tickets for the upcoming municipal elections. According to news reports, Ajapnyak District Leader Ruben Hovsepyan, brother of the RoA General Prosecutor, visited the RPA campaign headquarters in the Silikyan neighborhood and then wished to enter the nearby PPA campaign office. He wasn't prevented from entering by PPA supporters. An argument ensued which quickly escalated into a fight. "Hetq's" sources say that last night's brawl started back on Saturday in the shape of a argument and continued on Sunday in the vicinity of the "Shirak" supermarket. Our sources say that last evening, about one hundred meters from the Armenian Royal Palace restaurant a heated exchange took place between Ajapnyak District Leader Ruben Hovsepyan and PPA campaign manager Vahan Karapetyan over the recent incidents. It appears that Mr. Hovsepyan demanded that Vahan Karapetyan remove all PPA campaihn offices from "his district". At that moment, Mr. Hovsepyan's assistant, Armen Baghdasaryan, who goes by the nickname "Aluminum Armen", opened the car door and struck Mr. Karapetyan. This set off a fight between supporters of the two camps. Armen Baghdasaryan wound up in hospital, getting twenty-two stitches to his eye. Our sources say that the PPA supporters got the better of the fight. The fight lasted some twenty minutes. Photo-journalist Gagik Shamshyan arrived on the scene some fifteen minutes later. Some PPA supporters tried to prevent Mr. Shamshyan from doing his job but police on the scene intervened and the journalist was allowed to photograph the site. The Police Press Department hasn't made any statement about last night's incident. The even couldn't tell us if any arrests had been made and the number of those injured, if any. They promised to divulge some particulars later on today.
