Evicted Residents Not Allowed to Vote

Sixty-eight former residents of Buzant Street were prohibited from voting in today's municipal elections in Yerevan. The government in the name of public domain had seized their property. The evicted residents now either live with relatives or have rented a place to live. Either way, it is next to impossible to be registered as Yerevan residents. Vachagan Hakobyan, President of the "Defense of Property Rights" NGO, told Hetq that, "In essence, we aren't citizens of Yerevan and have no rights whatsoever here." He states that before the elections the organization had petitioned the RoA Human Rights Defender, the United Sates Ambassador, and the President of the Central Electoral Committee, among others. Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch even called officials of the Armenian government to resolve the situation, but to no avail. "They did this on purpose because they realized that none of us would be voting for the regime," said Mr. Hakobyan
