Officials March To Save Environment...Or Do They Really?

07_06-texut-akcia The accompanying picture shows just a few of the top Armenian government official that participated in yesterday's march in downtown Yerevan to mark World Environment Day. That's to say that the presence of President Serzh Sargsyan, Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan and National Assembly President Hovik Abrahamyan was a foregone conclusion from the start so the organizers of the march, the Save Teghut Coalition, thought it appropriate to fashion stick figures of the officials with their photos. Hrayr Savzyan, an environmental activist, said, "President Sargsyan has stated on numerous occasions that he backs the mining operation at Teghut. Prime Minister Sargsyan no longer bothers to respond to our calls, while NA President Abrahamyan was stripping stones from the walls of the "Stone Symphony" in Garni to use as construction material for a church he was building nearby." 07_06-texut-akcia2 The marchers wound their way through downtown Yerevan and called on residents to urge government officials to halt preparatory construction now taking place in the Teghut Forest and to block any plans to erect a Sotk gold processing plant on the shores of Lake Sevan. Heritage Party Deputy Zaruhi Postanjyan participated in the events and said that plans to mine uranium at Teghut and to build at factory at Sevan would turn Armenians into "environmental refugees". 07_06-texut-akcia1 "We have brought our officials here today, albeit as representations, to tell them that they are responsible for the tragic state of Armenia's ecology. We have substituted axes and saws for their hands since they are tacitly supporting the destruction of our natural environment," said activist Mariam Soukhoudyan. The march ended up where it started, Komitas Park. As for the lifeless officials that wound up lying on the grass, Mariam said, "They weren't with us in spirit. Their hearts were elsewhere. They are enacting heartless decisions."
