MP Safaryan - Amnesty Bill Needs Major Overhaul

At an press conference held earlier today, Heritage Party Deputy Styopa Safaryan said the soon to be announced general amnesty wouldn't live up to the expectations of the public nor the opposition political forces. "The amnesty will not be of the size and scope expected by the public nor the opposition," he said, adding that the regime neither has the political will or guts to declare a truly comprehensive amnesty. "In the speech given by President Sargsyan on May 28, in which he states that he would be willing to use his executive powers to declare an amnesty if the country's political forces petitioned him to do so and proved that the public desired such an amnesty, only goes to show that the president doesn't wish to take such an initiative on his own," Deputy Safaryan said. He went on to say that such statements seek to have the opposition put in a situation where they would have to make such a request and thus create the impression that they were seeking absolution of their crimes. "If we also tack on the statements of Sos Sargsyan and others in the Public Council that the events of March 1st must not be reviewed separately from other criminal acts subject to such an amnesty, than the regime will have solved the issue when the opposition makes its legal and political petition to the authorities," Deputy Safaryan noted. He also stated that he didn't think the amnesty would permit the four parliamentary deputies now being tried to return to the national assembly, adding that the ARF and the Heritage Party must strive to make necessary changes to the bill now coming up for a vote at an extraordinary session of the parliament on July 19.
