NKR President Sahakyan: Society Must Play a Role in Anti-Corruption Fight

During a conference entitled "Civil Society and the Fight against Corruption, NKR President Bako Sahakyan noted that while bribery and official abuse are common in all governments it is particularly rooted in the government of Karabakh, which is still mired in the realities stemming from the unsettled Karabakh-Azerbaijan conflict. "Any negative manifestation that distorts judicial justice and damages the people's confidence in the future directly threatens our government's security," President Sahakyan said. The conference, in addition to representatives of the three branches of the NKR government, was also attended by RoA Chief Prosecutor Aghvan Hovsepyan, Arman Mkrtumyan, President of the RoA Court of Cassation and members of various RoA judicial bodies. Speaking about the fight against corruption, President Sahakyan said that improvements have been registered in the judicial and law-enforcement sectors, and that essential changes have been made in the social and educational fields, particularly when it comes to college admittance exams. President Sahakyan noted, however, that parallel to the efforts of the government in the fight against corruption, the public at large also has its work cut out for it. RoA Chief Prosecutor Hovsepyan said that "the average citizen must be the most demanding when it comes to open and transparent government".
