New Armenian Spell Check Program 97% Accurate

"Armenian PowerSpell 2009" is an Armenian spell check program that its creator, Arman Boshyan, claims to be able to recognize 97% of the words currently in usage in Armenian. It was displayed at today's DigiTec Business 2009 exhibition. The program, distributed by the company "Partev-Papyan", makes corrections according to grammatical, punctuation and rules of syntax. It also includes a dictionary of abbreviations and offers translations of non-Armenian words. Mr. Boshyan told "Hetq" that, "We are dealing with one of the most difficult languages in the world. Word usage forms are so numerous that the program isn't merely based on a dictionary. The program actually analyses the most correct usage form for each word in a given context." Users of the program can add words that the program currently doesn't include to the dictionary. This way, the 3% of unrecognized words is being constantly whittled down. Up till 2009, the program's prototype had been distributed under the table. The new licensed version went on the market on March 1. The number of subscribers has reached 300; mostly government agencies and private companies. A yearly subscription cost 9,000 drams. Mr. Boshyan told "Hetq" that those found to using pirated copies of the program would be warned. If those violating licensing laws fail to stop using pirated copies they will be taken to court and sued to the tune of 900,000 drams. The program's creator joked, "For us, the use of pirated copies is more to our benefit than licensed copies." Two instances of pirate copies being used have already been uncovered. Fortunately, before a suit against them was filed, the offenders contacted "Armenian PowerSpell" and said they wanted to purchase legal versions of the program.
