Four Jailed Opposition Leaders Freed Under Amnesty
Under the provisions of the recently approved general amnesty, Judge Mnatsakan Martirosyan ordered Parliament Deputies Hakob Hakobian and Miasnik Malkhasian as well as former Foreign Minister Aleksandr Arzumanian set free today immediately after being sentenced to five years apiece for organizing post-election violence in Yerevan in the wake of last year's disputed presidential elections.
Suren Sirounyan, another opposition activist, was also freed under the amnesty. Mr. Sirounyan was being tried with Mr. Arzumanian and received a four-year prison sentence on the same charge.
Upon being released, Mr Sirounyan declared, "This verdict is illegal and unacceptable. We will seek to have it overturned. Our first priority, however, is the release of our other jailed colleagues."
Prosecutors Koryun Piloyan and Aram Amirzadyan had demanded a six year sentence for Mr. Arzumanian and five years for Suren Sirounyan.
