July 2 Opposition Rally: Part Celebration, Part Renewal

10_04-l_zurabyanAt a press conference held earlier today, HAK Coordinator Levon Zurabyan stated that the reason for calling an unscheduled public rally on July 2 was to provide an opportunity for the people to meet opposition leaders who had recently been released from detention. "We must provide this opportunity so that we can celebrate their release and reconfirm our will to see that those political prisoners still jailed are also released," Mr. Zurabyan said. The HAK official said that the newly released individuals would give a new boost to the movement since they all have large followings within society. Mr. Zurabyan also didn't rule out the possibility that HAK would make changes to the alliance's strategy. "We need time to review the situation and rethink our approach. Serious discussions lay before us. We haven't had time to sit everyone down around a table and chew matters over." He even touched on the possibility of dialogue with the regime if all political prisoners were released by September. "We have always expressed our willingness to do so. But after this entire 1.5 year process and the recent fraudulent elections, let them release all the prisoners and then we'll see." Regarding the recent announcement made by opposition figure Nikol Pashinyan to come out of hiding and continue the struggle from a prison cell, Mr. Zurabyan commented, "Nikol Pashinyan has made a personal decision and we view it as a brave and politically correct one. As to why he expects to wind up in jail, let's just say he's a realist." Mr. Zurabyan also didn't rule out the possibility that Khachatur Sukiasyan, another opposition figure now in hiding, would make a similar announcement.
