Opposition Considers Creation of a New March 1st "Fact Finding Group"

Levon Zurabyan, Coordinator of the HAK opposition alliance, stated today that the regime had a chance to start a dialogue with the opposition and the public by freeing all detainees but that the actions of the government prove that it isn't motivated by a desire to seek national consolidation and a lessening of social tension. "The underlying reason why the regime has released a number of political prisoners is to avert sanctions by Europe," Mr. Zurabyan said. The HAK official argued that just the right number of political prisoners were released in order to satisfy the demands of European organizations. "These steps by the regime are not satisfactory in the least. Until the time comes when the government releases all detainees and stops the criminal pursuit of those six individuals now in hiding, we will consider that the government continues to persecute its own people. We will thus take adequate measures in response," Mr. Zurabyan said. He stated that HAK would keep up the pressure and that the democratic struggle would grow in strength given that President Sargsyan instituted an amnesty that only sowed more seeds of anger in the public. Mr. Zurabyan speculated that one of the measures HAK might seek is the creation of an alternative "fact finding group" since the opposition has a huge amount of documentation at its disposal regarding the events of March 1, 2008.
