Emotions Flare in Run-Up to "Writers Union" Election

Elections to select the next president and administrative board for the RoA Writers Union take place on July 4. Top candidates are current President Levon Ananyan, Abgar Apinyan and Razmik Tavoyan. President Ananyan argued that Abgar Apinyan wasn't a suitable candidate for the post. "Mr. Apinyan was kicked out of the Union by a unanimous vote of the board. How can a person who isn't a member and who doesn't attend meetings be suddenly voted in as president? He has enough right to become president as does the street sweeper outside this building." Levon Ananyan made his remarks at a press conference held earlier today. Mr. Ananyan didn't rule out the possibility that emotions would start to flare in the home stretch leading to the elections. "Now the situation is a normal working one. But there are two atmospheres at work; one within the union and one in the opposition outside. The outside situation has been artificially stoked up for the past two years." He said the Union had no ideological disagreements with the opposition camp. "What ideological differences can there be when I've presided over the Union for the past 8 years and when everything is up and running. Unless you see things through black glasses you'd have to say that the Union is chugging along," Mr. Ananyan said. He claimed that opposition to his continued leadership of Writers Union is being financed by certain oligarchs who hold a grudge against him. Despite these conditions, Mr. Ananyan predicted that the 400 members of the Union would cast their votes in the best interests of the organization. "We must overcome these problems. The literary public has seen the work carried out by the likes of Razmik Tavoyan, Abgaryan and even Levon. No of us has just landed from the moon," he said. Mr. Ananyan is convinced that when all sincere methods are exhausted, the opposition resorts to creating scandals via the pages of the pay-to-order press.
