PM Sargsyan Assures 900 Jobs at Agarak Plant

After the special government session that was convened on June 26 in the city of Kapan, RoA prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan, the Deputy PM and a number of other visiting ministers travled to Agarak for an on-site inspection of the local copper-molybdenum plant. Also on hand was the Syunik Regional Administrator.

In the town square, local residents met with the government delegation and called on the prime minister to support the Meghri District. They told PM Sargsyan that Meghri served as the gateway to Europe and must be preserved. Talking to the residents we got the impression that they were suspicious that this visit by government officials would be different from others in the past and that anything would be done to improve the situation in the area. "They come in turns and make all kinds of promises. Then they return. 550 workers have already been laid off. Before this company took over the plant there were 1,451 individuals on the payroll." After meeting with company reps, PM Sargsyan met with reporters and said that the Agarak plant would restart operations as of July 1. He said that the government had approved a $14 million loan to the company. "With this loan the long-term operation of the plant is ensured. This is important from an economic and social perspective. The plant will be able to purchase the necessary equipment that will boost productivity and make its products more competitive on the open market. Also, from a social standpoint, unpaid wages will now be disbursed. The company has assured us that wages for May and June will be paid and that salaries will be paid on time in the future," PM Sargsyan said. Referring to the 550 worker lay off, PM Sargsyan said that the agreement reached with the company last November stipulated that 900 jobs would be retained. "Those 900 individuals will have permanent jobs come July 1," he stated. Today, the delegation will travel to the Tatev monastery complex and then return to Yerevan.
