A number of road repair projects are now underway in Akhalkalak that include the positioning of street lights along stretches of several roadways. In an interview with A-Info, Vahan Batoyan, who heads the Economic and Infrastructure Development Agency at the Akhalkalak District Administration, the funding for the repairs is from various sources. 150,000 Georgian Lari has been allovat6ed by the district budget for repairs of the Khando to Kokyo and Lamatourtskh-Tourtskh stretches of road according to Mr. Batoyan and 250,000 Lari for asphalt paving in Akhalkalak itself. As part of the Millennium Challenge the stretch of highway from Akhalkalak to the Turkish bordr is scheduled to be paved. "The work has started and is presently going full steam ahead," Mr. Batoyan said. Local residents have joined specialist with the construction companies that won the work bids in carrying out the repairs. Due to a small demand for day laborers by the Millennium Challenge program, promises to staff the work teams with 70-80% local residents have been scaled back to 10-15%.
