Armenian Teachers from Javakhk Still Waiting for Travel Permission

In the ongoing flap regarding Armenian teachers from Georgia not being permitted to travel to Armenia for retraining seminars, the RoA Ministry of Education and Science has sent an official dispatch to the Georgian Ministry Of Education. Most of the teachers hail from Armenian schools in Javakhk. Georgian authorities held up their travel plans on June 12 without any explanation. Nuneh Vardanyan, who heads the Diaspora desk at the RoA Education Ministry told "Hetq" that while there is still no exact date for the retraining seminars but that they have been tentatively scheduled for July 27 to August 7. "It all depends on when the Georgian authorities allow the teachers to travel. In any event, we are prepared to receive them during this time frame," Mrs. Vardanyan said. When we asked her how many teachers are scheduled to come to Armenia, 70 or 90, Mrs. Vardanyan explained 150 teachers were selected for retraining from 150 schools in Georgia. She said that the teachers wer to come in stages since they didn't have the resources to accept all 150 at once. 90 teachers wer to arrive first. "Since we didn't have the resources we asked that 70 teachers be sent in the first stage and that we'd try to get the resources to retrain the other 20 as well," Mrs. Vardanyan noted. The teachers are supposed to be retrained in Armenian Church history since a separate course is planned in the subject during the next academic year.
