Ananyan or Tavoyan: Who Will be Elected as Next President of Writers Union?

30_05-v-arsenThe Writers Union of Armenia will convene tomorrow to elect its next president. The main candidates for the post are current president Levon Ananyan and former president Razmik Tavoyan.A group of young artists called a press conference earlier today and debated who would be the right pick for the job. Poet Vahe Arsen said that, for a writer, it shouldn't be important who the president of the Writers Union is. "Writers shouldn't be caught up in such sordid squabbles. If the writer is a member of the union then they should make the opinion known by way of the ballot. The job of a writer is to write. Some believe that the president of the union is to blame for their lack of talent and that it's also the president's fault if they don't have published works," Mr. Arsen said. M-AbajyancProse writer Mikayel Abajants sought to differ with the poet. "If the president of the union is not worthy of the job and administers the union according to his moral values, then that person shouldn't continue on as president. Naturally, the president can't hand out talent but the degree to which real talent is appreciated is the result of the work carried out by the president." A-NikoghosyanCritic Arkemnik Nikoghosyan believes that tomorrow's convention shouldn't be a opportunity to trade barbs but rather a creative process designed to formulate the future activities of the union. "We have become so politicized, that we regard the literary field as a political arena to wage political struggle. This is wrong. Rather than discussing modern literature and its problems, we spend all day debating our internal bickering and are pleased," the critic noted. Mr. Nikoghosyan sees no alternative to Levon Ananyan as president. "It goes without saying that the Writers Union is in need of reform. At issue, is the fact that at the moment there is no one in our field who will execute those reforms." Vahe Arsen said that he will be voting for Levon Ananyan tomorrow. "Everyone knows that Ananyan never gave me a medal or anything. I come to union meetings about four times a year. I see that the groundwork has been prepared for the many young writers in our midst. Furthermore, Razmik Tavoyan as president would be a step back for the union since he was already president and left. It would be wrong for him to come back now," Mr. Arsen argued.
