Levon Ananyan – “We’ll stuff the ballot boxes so that reporters can have a sensational story”

Elections will soon get underway for the next president of the Writers Union of Armenia. The five candidates are Levon Ananyan, Razmik Tavoyan, Edward Militonyan, Davit Muradyan and Davit Gasparyan. The favorites are current President Ananyan and ex-President Tavoyan. R-davoyanMr. Tavoyan has said that he really isn't interested if Mr. Ananyan gets re-elected or not but believes that there is a good chance that he will, based on the mood of the union members. Some members, who wished to remain anonymous, told us that they were opposed to bot front runners, but given any alternatives, they would have to make a choice between bad and worse. L-Ananyan_4.07.09We have already pointed out that Mr. Ananyan has barred some reporters from attending the meeting, saying that they hadn't received proper certification in advance. Mr. Ananyan once worked as a reporter. When asked if he knew that by barring reporters he was essentially breaking the law, Mr. Ananyan replied, "I won't let them in. You can take me to court." When asked if he expected ballot stuffing during the election process, Mr. Ananyan's second brillant response was that, "Yeah, we'll do it so that you people can have something sensational to write about." Many of the members were also opposed to letting reporters in saying that, "There will be no battle going on here. Why have you come? Just to take photos?" Razmik Tavoyan stated that all reporters should be allowed in. "Reporters demand the truth and they can't provide the truth. It's the first time that I've seen such a thing, when an NGO doesn't have the right to issue credentials to reporters," he said. When asked by "Hetq" if he saw any parallels between the presidential elections and the union's. Mr. Tavoyan replied, "I'd rather not make any parallels."
