Vardan Petrosyan’s “Lifers”: New Theater of the Absurd

04_07-tsmah-bantarkyalnerVardan Petrosyan will present his new theatrical creation to the public this summer. The new work entitled "Tsmah bantarkyalner" (Lifers - the name given to prisoners sentenced to life in prison) will hit the stage at the Hagop Baronian Theater on July 17, 18 and 19. A new twist to this performance is that Mr. Petrosyan will be accompanied by two other actors; Gevorg Minasyan and Melik Vardanyan. "The presence of three actors took me to a new style. Usually, my performances are political satire. This is more absurdist theater where everything is exaggerated to the max. Comic scenes have been transformed into the grotesque and due to those exaggerations we see reality in actual terms. People will see themselves reflected in a mirror, something that they frequently shy away from doing. We always fear seeing the defects that we have and thus we're constantly engaged in self-deception." Mr. Petrosyan will play the role of a 'lifer" who, in his words, is representative not just of the situation in Armenia but the world over. "Society will be represented in three layers. Gevorg Minasyan will act out a character who is powerful, hungry for conquest; a real destroyer. Melik Vardanyan will take the role of the people who are always forgetting our past history, failing to cull lessons from it. The people are bereft of any rights except for one; to sleep and dream of Masis. I will play an intellectual type who tries to teach one the lessons of history and the other, sincerity. Of course, this is a complete failure."
