Ruben Hakhverdyan - Concerts are Similar to Performing Striptease

06_07-r_hakhverdyanTomorrow, July 7, Ruben Hakhverdyan will give a concert entitled "After 50". The popular Armenian singer/song writer said that the name has nothing to do with his 59th birthday. At a press conference held today, Mr. Hakhverdyan said that he will be performing a new song called "Ktak" ("Will" - as in last will and testament). He also said that he generally describes concerts as a "spiritual striptease". "It's the same undressing ceremony only from a spiritual point of view," he said. During the press conference, the singer also confessed that he really doesn't like his songs. "I can't get around to liking my songs. When you write a song you exert such so much energy that you grow tired and disgusted. To perform is a whole other art form. You are trying to present your thoughts and ideas to the public," he said. Mr. Hakhverdyan expressed his concerns about the state of the environment in Armenia. "All those high rise buildings in Yerevan really made a mess of things. Even if God himself cam down he wouldn't be able to put things right. I'm amazed at how they can construct homes that close together. I never walk along Northern Avenue. It resembles more of a pantheon or mausoleum." He's also concerned about Armenian foreign policy, especially regarding Armenian-Turkish relations. "Two things scare me the most. The first is the possible inflow of drugs from Turkey. Second, is the increased influx of Turkish "mugham" melodies into our defenseless culture. Even today, many singers lift the words from Turkish songs, change them and sing them. God knows what will happen if the border opens," Mr. Hakhverdyan said. Mr. Hakhverdyan stated that he wasn't a supporter of the Dashnak Party in Armenia but rather one who agreed with the ideology. "Hey, it’s the most normal political party around, even though there are some in the party that need tpo be executed on the spot. It has its share of bribe takers as well." Mr. Hakhverdyan said he doesn't understand how the current authorities in Armenia can be so untalented when it comes to resisting the globalization tendencies of the world to even a slightest degree. "They only live for today. All they think about all day is how they can grab and snatch a little more here and there. They don't realize the next generation can wind up in a big mess due to their actions; at least when it comes to the environment," he lamented. The singer/song writer pins his hopes for the future on the younger generation. "If me and our president are holdovers from the Soviet era and carry around that serf mentality, then, the new generation can think and act more freely."
