Trial of Former Abovyan Mayor Adjourned
The defense statement read by lawyers of former Abovyan Mayor Grigor Voskerchyan was so long that the prosecutor in the case asked the court for a postponement.
In their lengthy statement, the defense team singled out the testimony of previous witnesses, arguing that it contained nothing to incriminate their client. One particular witness, Abovyan resident Luiza Stepanyan, had testified that Mr. Voskerchyan had handed her 2,000 drams so that she would participate in an opposition rally. Mrs. Stepanyan said the rally took place in Yerevan's Republic Square.
Attorney Stepan Voskanyan noted that the witness, seemingly in need of 2,000 drams, spent a one month vacation in the United Arab Emirates.
In addition, Mrs. Stepanyan stated that she doesn't understand Armenian very well and used a bunch of Russian terms during her oral testimony. However, it turns out that she provided written testimony to the pre-trial examining body in flawless Armenian.
