Deputy Postanjyan's Slander Charges to be Reviewed by Police

08_07-z_postanjyan+08_07-a_khachatryanYesterday, the RoA General Prosecutor's Office received a letter from Heritage Party Deputy Zaruhi Postanjyan referring to an article and photo that appeared in the "Azatamtutyun" newspaper. The deputy claims that the article was slanderous and caused personal injury. Prosecutor Office spokesperson Sona Truzyan has informed "Hetq" that the article in question will be reviewed and appropriate legal action taken if so warranted. The deputy's complaint will be delivered to the RoA Police for investigation since the Prosecutor's Office doesn't handle such matters. The police have ten days to decide whether or not to send the case to the criminal courts for further adjudication. The newspaper article and accompanying satirical photo came on the heels of Deputy Postanjyan's activities at the recent PACE session where she sought the signatures of Azerbaijani and Turkish deputies for a bill she wished to introduce. Many in the Armenian PACE delegation and political figures in Yerevan widely criticized her for her actions. Deputy Postanjyan claims the newspaper article included false information and that she wished to hold "Azatamtutyun" accountable. On the other hand, Chief Editor Artyom Khachatryan told "Hetq" a few days ago that the article had nothing of a slanderous nature but that it was possible to be viewed as "injurious" by some. Slander is a criminal offense according to Article 135 of the RoA Criminal Code and punishable by a fine of from 100 to 500 times ones salary (100,000 to 500,000 drams). Personal injury is punishable by a fine of 100 to 400 times ones salary (100,000 to 400,000 drams). If the same news outlet slanders a deputy twice or more there is the possibility of a one year jail sentence.
