Criminal Case Launched in Postanjyan Defamation Suit

Based on the statement provided by National Assembly Deputy Zarouhi Postanjyan, the Kentron Police Department of Investigations has launched a criminal case based on Article 136 (personal defamation) of the RoA Criminal Code. Deputy Postanjyan had notified the General Prosecutor's Office on June 7 about an article appearing in the "Azatamtutyun" newspaper that she found slanderous and injurious to her person. The police dropped any allegation of slander. Deputy Postanjyan became the target of ridicule and attack by various pro-government papers after her participation in the June session of PACE, during which she was accused of cooperating with Turkish and Azerbaijani deputies to get a resolution passed through regarding the domestic political situation in Armenia. On July 1, "Azatamtutyun" Chief Editor Artyom Khachatryan told "Hetq" that there was nothing of a slanderous nature in the article in question and that "certain people need to be the butt of ridicule occasionally". Those found guilty of "personal defamation" face a fine of 100 to 400 times one's minimum salary (100,000 - 400,000 AMD).
