Shades of Zorro: Masked-Man Sows Fear in Village With Nightly Romantic Jaunts

zorro-bagaran_21.08.09For the last two years, residents of the village of Bagaran in Armavir Marz have been warning visitors not to leave their houses after it gets dark. They warn outsiders that a masked man roams the village streets at night, sowing fear and dread in all he comes across. Ani, a Yerevan resident, spent her holiday in Bagaran in her grandmother's house. She says that she lost a lot of weight in the four days she spent there just from fear alone. "Everywhere you went, people were talking about the masked marauder. I never bumped into him but relatives say he's a tall man dressed in all black. They say he wears a mask just kike Zorro and goes around tapping on windows after dark. Supposedly he runs away if someone comes outside to check things out." Bagaran residents say that the new local Zorro is known to particularly make visits to those homes where there are young girls in the family. Village Mayor Gevorg Margaryan says that he's heard the rumors of the masked intruder but that he's personally never seen him. The mayor once called the police in last year to see if they could track now the uninvited guest. "It's an exaggeration on the part of the villagers. They're concocting this story out of fear. I think it's some love-smitten young man. He wears all black so that no one can identify him when he makes his nightly jaunts," the mayor says. He says that his suspicions turned out to be true when the police were called in last year. The cops discovered a young man who would nightly visit the house of the girl he fancied and stand under her window, pouring out his heart to her.
