National Assembly Convenes Hearing on Sexual Abuse at Special Needs Schools
Today, the RoA National Assembly's Standing Committee on Education, Science, Youth, Culture and Sport, discussed incidents of sexual abuse alleged to have taken place at Nubarashen Special Schools 11 and 18.
During a press conference held after the committee session, MP Anahit Bakhshyan responded to a question posed by "Hetq" by saying that, "At the committee hearing were representatives of the Social Insurance Agency, the education ministry and various NGO's. It is to the credit of Artak Davtyan, the committee president, that pointed questions were raised especially regarding cases of sexual abuse at the schools."
MP Bakhshyan added that education is lacking in these schools. "The only thing they do there is provide a bed for the students and a meal."
Readers will remember that as a result of the wide-spread allegations of sexual abuse at these schools, vice principals of some 18 schools have been charged with sexual abuse and assault.
In the case of Nubarashen School 11, young activist Mariam Sukhudyan has been charged with "false denunciation" after raising the alarm regarding the immoral behavior of one of the school's teachers.
