Young Activists to Confront Education Minister About Fate of Nubarashen School Pupils

31-08_11-hatuk dprocOn the first day of the new school year, a group of young people will hand deliver a letter to the RoA Minister of Education and Science, demanding that he personally investigate the situation at Nubarshen Special Needs School #11 and take steps to remedy the shortcomings there. The group says the school is plagued with unsanitary conditions, poor food, sexual abuse of the children and ill treatment in general. Copies of the protest letter will also be posted to the RoA Prime Minister, Speaker of the Parliament, General Prosecutor and Human Rights Ombudsman. The young activists had uncovered these problems during volunteer work they carried out at the school. For instance, they discovered that kids with normal mental capabilities had been registered at the school The Ministry of Education acted on their findings and investigated the matter. As a result, four students were taken out of the special needs school and sent to regular public schools. In their letter, the young people will be asking the minister what has become of these four pupils. The ministry had told volunteer work group leader Mariam Sukhudaryan that the four would receive personalized curriculum plans equal to public school standards and that they would be then academically evaluated to see whether they could be transferred to regular schools.
