Heritage Party: Protocols Must be Put to a National Referendum

13_02-a_martirosyan1In a public statement issued today by Armenia’s Heritage Party regarding the recent protocols signed by Turkey and Armenia , the opposition party calls for the documents to be put to a national referendum and points to a list of unacceptable points contained therein. At a press conference held today, Armen Martirosyan, a top Heritage Party official, stated that there is no rational thinking person in Armenia who is opposed to normal relations with Turkey or open borders. "However, we are not just talking about open borders here. Armenia never closed the border; it was Turkey. And it must open them just as it closed them. There are many unacceptable points in the protocols, e.g. the formation of an inter-governmental sub-commission of historians. It is clear that the reality of the Genocide will be debated. This will immediately have a negative impact on the international Genocide recognition efforts and will then call the fact of the Genocide into question," Mr. Martirosyan said, adding that the present Armenian regime hasn’t been able to protect the country and the interests of the Armenian people. "Instead, Turkey has been able to push through its pre-conditions that it presented in the 1990’s and get them included in these documents. What they have been striving for starting from 1915 has been brought to life in these protocols," he added. Mr. Martirosyan explained the absence of TV reporters at the press conference by arguing that the government wishes to avoid any public discussion and debate on the matter that might lead to a consensus of opinion.
