ARF Plans Sit-Down Hunger Strike Over Protocols
Starting today, a sit-down hunger strike will be staged by members of the ARF’s Supreme Council opposite the RoA Government Building in central Yerevan. ARF MP Vahan Hovhannisyan stated at an earlier press conference that he too would participate if the Council decided it was politically correct. (Vahan Hovhannisyan was the ARF’s presidential candidate in 2008).
Mr. Hovhannisyan stated that the ARF would be staging a number of public events to focus attention on the protocols recently signed by the governments of Armenia and Turkey. "Conditional points have been squeezed into those protocols that contradict our national security agenda," the ARF MP noted.
The ARF has proposed that there be hearings held in the Armenian parliament regarding the protocols. To date, only the Heritage Party has expressed agreement to the proposal.
Mr. Hovhannisyan has welcomed President Sargsyan’s invitation to Armenia’s’ political forces to take part in a September 17,general meeting devoted to a study of the protocols but added that he believed that Armenian TV would put a positive spin on the event and that the public would not learn anything regarding the pitfalls of the protocols.
"I believe that there is still time to make modifications to the protocols but that Serzh Sargsyan is the only one capable of entering those changes. He will only do to under public pressure," Mr. Hovhannisyan concluded.
