Local Community Mayors Read "Hetq" and Mend Their Ways

It appear that members of the Aragatzotn Regional Council, local community leaders and other government officials, actually read "Hetq" and are concerned about how the press views their actions, inaction and personal habits. On September 18, I visited the Aragatzotn Regional Council meeting that was scheduled to focus on 5 main issues, most notably problems dealing with irrigation and drinking water. To my surprise, though, before the council session started several community leaders approached me, saying that they had read previous articles in "Hetq" as to how community leaders were constantly yapping away on their cell phones or napping during the last council session. They told me their conduct was a matter of pride and that they wouldn’t let it happen again. And they kept their word. Not only did they refrain from using their phones during the session or dozing off but they grilled the representatives of the Water Department fairly mercilessly. Present at the council session were Andranik Andreasyan, President of the State Water Committee and Kamo Aghababyan, Deputy Director of Armenian Water and Sewer Co. Mr. Andreasyan responded to the complaints of many of the local community leaders regarding the lack of water by saying that the Water Department’s budget would be limited this year as well. Due to the monetary restraints, Mr. Andreasyan was quite keen to find out if those community leaders with local water supplies had fixed leasing rates. Byurakan community leader Hrachya Avagyan told us that the town supplies its own water and that residents are quite satisfied with the service since there is water round the clock.
