Repercussions of the Georgian-Russian Conflict

Given that many of the responses left in the “Commentary Section” often have no relevance to the article in question, “Hetq” has decided to create a space where readers can discuss any number of current events and issues in the news. While we will essentially suggest the topics to be discussed, readers will also have the opportunity to propose topics as well. We simply request our readers to refrain from using personal vitriol, slander and foul language.

This week we are proposing the present Georgian-Russian conflict as a topic for discussion. What are the possible consequences for Armenia? Already, some 30% of the gas supplied to Armenia through Georgia has been cut and truck freight has ground to a halt as well. Even if   military hostilities cease, Armenia will face a new set of challenges due to the resulting state of affairs. If we take into account that the opposing parties are nations of vital strategic importance to Armenia, do we have the right to label Armenia’s present “neutrality” as an unsatisfactory response to the war. Is it correct to say that Armenia could have taken a leading role in brokering a peace deal between the warring sides? What is behind this political stance of Armenia? Let’s attempt to discuss these and other issues.

Again, our only request is that readers participate in a manner befitting the seriousness and complexity of the topics. Inappropriate language will be deleted without exception.
