Student Union Charges Police with Interference
The student union of the New National Conservative Movement has labeled the steps taken by the police yesterday to prevent them from delivering a letter to the foreign ministry as a violation of their freedom of speech.
In a statement distributed today to the media, the students’ union lambasted this most recent incident of police excess, claiming that law enforcement had singled out their group for “special treatment”.
The statement claims that at 10 a.m. yesterday, police showed up at the student office and met with union Vice-President Helhelyan. They left after receiving assurances that the scheduled event was only to involve simply handing over a protest note and not a public demonstration.
At around 1:30 p.m., some 25 police officers nevertheless showed up at the office to escort some five students to the foreign ministry.
