“Radikal” Editor Believes Informal Agreement on Karabakh Already Reached

16.10.09-radikalISTANBUL - Ismet Berkan, an editor with the leftist Turkish newspaper "Radikal", stated today that he believed the presidents of Turkey and Armenia had already reached an informal resolution on the Karabakh issue.

In a statement to a group of visiting Armenian reporters, Mr. Berkan noted, "We do not believe that the protocols should contain any points on Karabakh since it is not a Turkish problem. But I believe that they have reached an informal understanding."
He also stated that he believed that the protocols would face a tougher ratification process in Armenia than Turkey and that it would be easier for the Turkish parliament to give its OK if Yerevan and Baku reached some type of agreement as to a solution.
Asked when he thought the protocols would be ratified, Mr. Berkan hesitated to make any predictions. He stated that the issue of Armenia wasn’t a top priority for Turkey and that the opening of the border could be delayed for several months during which time embassies would be established and later on a solution reached regarding Karabakh.
