Nikol Pashinyan – “What exactly am I being charged with?”

20_10-N-PashinyanThe trial of Armenian opposition activist and editor of the "Haykakan Zhamank" newspaper, Nikol Pashinyan, continues today at the Kentron and Nork-Marash District Court.
During the last court session, Prosecutor Koryun Piloyan summed up the charges against Mr. Pashinyan, who, asked for a recess to formulate a response to said charges. When today’s trial got underway at 12 p.m., Mr. Pashinyan asked specifically what he was being charged with."In this indictment there all the usual names – Alexander Arzumanyan, Suren Sirounyan, Hakob Hakobyan, Sasun Mikayelyan, Grigor Voskerchyan, Shant Harutunyan...but it is still not clear what exactly I’m supposed to have or haven’t done," declared the defendant. Mr. Pashinyan’s lawyer, Lusineh Sahakyan, also demanded that the indictment be more specific as to the charges and requested details as to which groups had guns and ammo distributed to them, evidence to this effect and whether Pashinyan had done so. She also asked the court to name those responsible for the deaths of ten people that night. Ms. Sahakyan wanted to know why, if Mr. Pashinyan is suppose to have caused all this, weren’t the families of the 10 victims included in the case in addition to the 178 additional individuals who were wounded that day and into the night. In response, Judge Mnatsakan Martirosyan stated that according to court procedure, the first to be interrogated would be the only injured party registered in the case – Vazgen Dabaghyan, a member of the police who, according to the pre-trial examination, suffered various injuries during a protest march on October 23, 2007.
