NGO Umbrella Group Critical of Government Plans to Modify Law

An umbrella organization of 79 NGO’s, calling itself the "Initiating Group for Civic Societal Structures" has issued a statement critical of the Armenian government’s attempt, through modifications and additions to the "Law on NGO’s", to introduce restrictions on the right of citizens to form public groups, i.e. civic assembly. The umbrella group argues that the government’s plan modifications to the law presently on the books would be a serious blow to the process of building the structures of a civic society in Armenia. The group also claims that the changes to the law violates the spirit of international conventions on the issue, most notably the directive REC (2007) directed to member nations of the European Council of Ministers.
