Georgian Appeals Court Upholds Sentences of Vahagn Chakhalyan and Relatives
Today, a Georgian Appeals Court sustained lower court rulings against jailed Javakhk political activist Vahagn Chakhalyan, his brother and father.
On April 7, the Akhaltskha Court of First Instance found Vahagn Chakhalyan guilty of "illegal arms and munitions possession" and "organizing of or participating in events designed to create public disorder" and sentenced him to ten years.
Vahagn Chakhalyan’s father, Ruben Chakhalyan was found guilty of the same two charges and was fined 5,000 Georgian Lari ($3,000). His younger brother, Armen Chakhalyan, was only found guilty of the weapons charge and fined 2,000 Lari.
The Chakhalyan defense team has stated that it intends to appeal today’s sentences to the Georgian Supreme Court.
