A Normal Cultural Center in Ushi Remains a "Pipe Dream"

ushi-gyuxapetaran_4.11.09The two-story building, located in the middle of the village of Ushi, Aragatzotn Marz, seen in the accompanying photo looks to the uninformed observer as a normal; apartment building. There are no signs on the outside wall to suggest otherwise. In reality, the building houses the village municipality, cultural center, library and post office. 04_11-cultural While the building has a separate annex for the cultural center, the roof is in such bad condition that it’s dangerous to even step a foot inside. Astghik Hovhannisyan, village municipality secretary, told “Hetq”, “Since we don’t have a working auditorium we can’t organize any type of cultural events. Some workers showed up a few times to take measurements but the promised repairs have never been realized.” The only new construction in the village is the out-patient health clinic. It too was once housed in the two-story building. 04_11-ushecinerMs. Hovhannisyan says, “The village budget is so limited that we don’t have the means to finance the needed repairs ourselves.” Till those needed funds are located, village residents will continue to play their backgammon and card games out in the open.
