Supporters of Avedis Kalayjian Demand His Immediate release

The Paris-based Avedis Kalayjian defense committee issued a public statement yesterday condemning the continued detention of the Syrian born Armenian on the eve of his seven month anniversary in a RoA jail cell. Mr. Kalayjian was arrested on April 6, 2009, a few days before a scheduled press conference during which the former member of the ruling Armenian Republican Party was to explain his disappointment with the party and a public statement regarding his resignation from its ranks. According to the defense committee press release, Mr. Kalayjian was arrested on the fabricated charge that he was conspiring to execute Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan. The release states that in the ensuing seven months, the courts have not been able to present any credible evidence to support this charge against Mr. Kalayjian who relocated to Armenia with his family from Paris in 2002. The most recent trial session, scheduled for October 27, never took place because the prosecuting party never showed up in court. The trial has been postponed till November 5. As a sign of protest at the political witch hunt being carried out against him, Mr. Kalayjian began a hunger strike on October 22. However, failing health forced him to call it off four days later. The defense committee demands the immediate release of Mr. Kalayjian, given his poor medical condition and the fact that the charge against him is an absurd fabrication that cannot be substantiated.
