Pashinyan Trial Continues; Defense Attorney Claims Witness Collusion

05_11-Shengavit-dataranDuring today’s trial of jailed "Haykakan Zhamanak" editor Nikol Pashinyan, National Security Service (NSS) Company Commander Andranik Arakelyan testified that he saw the accused with a megaphone in hand shouting out "No to Serzh, No to Robert".  However, unlike the other witness interrogated today, Major Khachatur Hovakimyan, Mr. Arakelyan said that he didn’t see any altercation between Pashinyan and anyone else at the demonstration. (Mr. Pashinyan is accused, among other charges, of assaulting a law enforcement officer). Under questioning from defense attorney Lusineh Sahakyan, Commander Arakelyan testified that on March 1, 2008, he was posted at the entrance to the Opera Square till 9 p.m. and later toured the city. At around 2 that afternoon he was in the vicinity of Myasnikyan Statue put didn’t take part in any police activity as well. From 4 p.m. till 3 the following morning, he was posted in front of the Government Building. Attorney Sahakyan asked the court not to allow any contact between those giving testimony since she claimed that she saw Hovakimyan and Arakelyan having a conversation in the hall during a trial recess. Judge Mnatsakan Martirosyan stated that court officers were on top of the situation and that the witnesses had been separated. However, when questioned by attorney Sahakyan, Mr. Arakelyan confessed that he had spoken to Mr. Hovakimyan before entering the courtroom.
