March 1st Police Abuse Defense Attorney - "My clients are being scapegoated"

Today, the trial of policemen charges with overstepping their legal bounds early on the morning of March 2, 2008, continued at the Kentron and Nork-Marash District Court. The defense team motioned that the court cut the charges against its clients, police officers Andranik Manukyan and Gegham Grigoryan.
Presiding Judge Gagik Avetisyan rejected the motion. The defense had argued that the two officers acted within the bounds of the law and that under Article 30 of the RoA Law Regatrding Police Procedure, officers have the right to use force against those citizens who do not submit to their directives. The defense also argued that just as in the previous trial session, that those allegedly injured at the hands of the police hadn’t been identified and that there was no evidence submitted to the court that that anyone had been injured. The defense attorney claimed that the two officers were being set up as patsies to take the brunt of the blame. Prosecutor Ashot Nadoyan claimed that the evidence points to the fact that the officers had indeed overstepped their bounds and had struck two citizens with the feet and fists. He argued that these citizens did nothing to warrant such a reaction from the police. The defense then asked for time to submit a challenge petition. The trial has been postponed till November 19.
