n-pashinyanToday, three witnesses to called to the witness stand in the ongoing trial of jailed "Haykakan Zhamank" editor Nikol Pashinyan. Today’s court proceedings dealt with "public disturbance" charges related to the events of March 1, 2008. The first witness, Harutyun Parishyan, testified that he saw Mr. Pashinyan in the vicinity of the Stepan Shahumyan Square extort the crowd by calls such as, "The elections are fraudulent, the president a fake and the regime must be overturned." The witness said that Pashinyan told the crowd to arm themselves with whatever possible and that people went to a construction site near the Yerevan Municipality and picked up stones, pieces of wood and pipes. "After Pashinyan made that call, many in the crowd went and were clutching something or other. When asked by Koryun Piloyan if there were any police officers around the witness said he couldn’t remember. At the end of the interrogation, Judge Mntsakan Martirosyan asked the witness if he hadn’t confused the site of the incident as he had mentioned Shahumyan Square and not Myasnikian Statue as the location where he stated to have seen Pashinyan. The witness said the events were a dim memory and that he thought the area was called Shahumyan Square. The next witness was Emma Beglaryan. She too stated that she saw Pashinyan urge the crowd on. Ms. Beglaryan again confessed in court that she had participated in a demonstration outside the home of former president Levon Ter-Petrosyan since, "my daughter had told me that they were going to a funeral, but it turns out that there wasn’t one." When asked by Pashinyan’s lawyer, Lusineh Sahakyan, if the witness had been offered money to attend, Ms. Beglaryan answered, "No, they just told me to come." The third witness was Lilya Mesrobyan. Under questioning from the judge, the witness said she knew the defendant, Pashinyan, and the injured Piloyan, from their pictures in the paper, but then changed her mind and confessed that she only recognized Pashinyan. Ms. Mesrobyan said she was in the vicinity of Myasnikian Statute of March 1, 2008 and that she saw Nikol Pashinyan. She testified that Pashinyan was calling on the crowd not to be frightened. She said Pashinyan addressed the crowd with the lines, "We are the victors. We must free ourselves from this regime. Do whatever you feel like. Create havoc." Ms. Mesrobyan wilted under cross examining by defense lawyers and said that many things were no longer clear in her mind and that, "when I get angry I don’t remember all that well". The trial has been postponed till November 17 since the other subpoenaed witnesses never showed up.
