MP Postanjyan Files Complaint Re: Illegal Actions of Police at Yesterday's Demonstration
Heritage Party MP Zaruhi Postanjyan today filed an official protest with RoA Police Chief Alik Sargsyan, Human Rights Ombudsman Armen Harutyunyan and General Prosecutor Aghvan Hovsepyan, regarding an incident that took place with police yesterday opposite the Constitutional Court on Baghramyan Street.
MP Postanjyan states that Heritage Party youth and various NGO representatives had gathered outside the Presidential Palace yesterday at around 4:30 pm to stage a protest against the present authoritative regime in Armenia, the Armenia-Turkish protocols and the Madrid Principles. In her complaint, MP Postanjyan claims that the police asked the demonstrators to move to the opposite sidewalk after only ten minutes.
MP Postanjyan went on to say that when she and fellow party MP Anahit Bakhshyan asked the police for legal substantiation of the demand to move, the police on the scene failed to do so and started to force the demonstrators to the other side of the street. After being forced to the opposite sidewalk, the protestors attempted to make their way to the Presidential Palace further up on Baghramyan Street but were confronted by a wall of police that blocked their advance.
MP Postanjyan says that the crowd and two members of parliament were barred from exercising their constitutional and civil rights to freedom of movement. She said that she has already lost count of the number of times when the police have barred citizens from exercising their rights.
She added that the police argued that the posters carried by the protestors were of a defamatory nature and would not be permitted near the Presidential Palace.
