Juvenile Crime Up 5% This Year; Many Attracted to Counterfeiting Rings

20_11-H-TamamyanHovhannes Tamanyan, Chief of the RoA Police Department’s Division of Criminal Investigation, stated today that during the first nine months of 2009, juvenile crime had gone up 4.9% over last year, totaling 383 incidents. The police official stated that 25.8% of the crimes were committed by juveniles aged 14-15 and that the remainder, or 74.2%, was committed by those aged 16-17. Females committed 6.2% of all juvenile crimes. A further breakdown revealed that 4 crimes were committed while under the influence of alcohol and one was drug induced. 16 of the crimes reported were committed by repeat offenders. Police Chief Tamanyan stated that it was particularly troubling to note that adults were behind the recruitment of juveniles into the world of crime and pointed to currency counterfeiting as a burgeoning sector for young criminals. Chief Tamanyan went on to state that during the period in question, the police registered 155 crimes committed against juveniles included two of premeditated murder, two accidental deaths, three suicides, 25 sexual abuse cases, including 3 rape crimes.
