Survey Shows 19-24 Year-Old Women Main Targets of Gender Violence
Jina Sargizova, coordinator of the United Nations’ Popolation Fund sponsored "Combating Gender-based Violence in the South Caucasus" project stated that results of the survey conducted in Armenia show that a majority of the violence committed against women is psychological in nature.
Ms. Sargisova was quick to point out however that the levels of sexual and physical violence were also unacceptable. Results of the written questionnaire show that 19-24 year-old women suffer the most from inflicted violence. "Perhaps it is because this age group is the most vocal and bold when it comes to speaking about the violence perpetrated against them that such a high percentage has been registered," said Ms. Sargisova.
The Project coordinator lamented the fact that a mere 15% of women who have suffered such violence ever speak about the experience. The full report will soon be published by the United Nations’ Popolation Fund in Yerevan.
