Videotapes Entered Into Evidence at Nikol Pashinyan Trial
Today, video tapes were entered into court as evidence in the trial of “Haykakan Zhamanak” editor Nikol Pashinyan. One tape, showing scenes from the presidential post-election period, depicted police officers telling the crowd of demonstrators that their march hadn’t been sanctioned by law-enforcement.
Mr. Pashinyan stated that it wasn’t clear what the police officers were referring to. “Was it prohibited for the people to demand justice and take advantage of their constitutional right or was it the fact that they were demanding that those responsible for manipulating the election results be punished?” he asked.
The jailed opposition leader said that the police were supposed to first contact the demonstration organizers and let them put a halt to the march before telling individual participants to lesave the area. “There is not one tape on file that shows the police first going to the demonstration organizers and demanding that they put a halt to the rally,” Mr. Pashinyan claimed.
Also shown in court was a videotape from the October 23, 2008 opposition march taken by “Chorrord Ishkhanutyun” reporter Gohar Veziryan. It plainly shows how police were using force to round-up citizens spreading news about the rally. Ms. Veziryan stated that she also has a longer tape depicting how Nikol Pashinyan was taken into custody that day.
