Pilgrimage to the oldest Armenian Apostolic Church in India

On 10th January 2010, the Armenian Community of Kolkata, Armenian College students and Armenian teachers made a pilgrimage to St. John the Baptist Armenian Church, Chinsurah. According to the press release sent by the Information Service of Armenian Collage & Philanthropic Academy, the church is situated at a distance of 65 kilometers from Kolkata. Chinsurah had once been a very important trading centre in West Bengal, India. St. John the Baptist Church is the second oldest Christian church in West Bengal and is now considered the oldest Armenian Apostolic Church in India, built in 1695. There are 180 graves with Armenian scripts left in the churchyard. The relics of St. John the Baptist which is kept in the Mother Church of Holy Nazareth, Kolkata is brought out once a year on this occasion. Divine Liturgy was conducted by Very Reverend Father Khoren Hovhannisyan, pastor of Armenians in India and the manager of the Armenian College & Philanthropic Academy. During Holy Mass Father Khoren blessed the faithful with the Golden Hand of St. John the Baptist and delivered a sermon. The pilgrimage was a very moving and spiritually renewal day for the Armenian Community of India.
