ARF's Rustamyan - Constitutional Court's Decision Marks Beginning of a Destructive Process
Armen Rustamyan, a member of the ARF Supreme Council, declared today that yesterday’s Constitutional Court decision validating the constitutionality of the Armenia-Turkey Protocols was the beginning of a process that would endanger Armenia’s security and was in opposition to the national interests of the nation.
Mr. Rustamyan stated that the ARF was totally opposed to the following three schemes of Turkey that were formulated by preconditions included in the Protocols – upsetting the process of international recognition of the Genocide, defining the Armenian-Turkish border on legal grounds and linking Armenia-Turkey relations with the Karabakh issue.
"There was ample evidence for the Constitutional Court to declare the Protocols unconstitutional. Sadly, this did not happen. However, the ever growing resentment against these documents, both in Armenia and the diaspora, is having positive results. The Protocols are the result of poor work by the RoA Minister of Foreign Affairs and serve as the basis for his dismissal," Rustamyan stated.
The ARF official said the anti-Protocol forces would attempt to stall ratification by the National Assembly through a petition drive. "We expected the Constitutional Court to arrive at such a decision so we started collecting signatures. We have 70,000 already. I will be convincing all the MP’s I know personally to oppose ratifying the Protocols or to ratify with reservations."
