Armenia's Multi-Residential Housing Stock is Old and Crumbling
There are some 21,500 multi-residential apartment buildings in Armenia and most are at least 60 years old.
One out of every three of these buildings is in a state of disrepair or structurally unsound.
420 such buildings (11,000 apartments) have been appraised as 3rd class unsound and 26 buildings (971 apts) have been classified as very dangerous.
There are another 996 residential houses in Armenia that have been classified as structurally unsound - due to natural disasters, enemy shelling, etc – that will need 6 billion AMD to repair.
MP Viktor Dallakyan has said that it is imperative that the government step in and assist these people since they haven’t the means to resolve the matter themselves.
Dallakyan said the situation was particularly worrisome in the earthquake disaster zone on north-western Armenia.
In the MP’s hometown of Vandzor there are 84 multi-residential buildings classified as 3rd degree unsound.
Minister of Urban Development Vardan Vardanyan has said that it would take 110 billion AMD just to reinforce buildings classified as 3rd degree structurally unsound.
“Naturally, today, we don’t have the resources to resolve the matter in the near future. The agenda we have adopted will set incremental deadlines for joint state-private cooperation to address these problems,” Minister Vardanyan added.
