An Alarm for the Council of Europe

Zaruhi Postanjyan, a National Assembly deputy from “Heritage” party and a member of PACE (Group of the European People's Party/Armenia) has issued a letter entitled “An Alarm for the Council of Europe”. The letter reads, “The Turkish prime minister Erdogan’s statement, which was broadcast by the BBC on March 16, 2010, with respect to deporting Armenians who allegedly are residing in Turkey illegally, was made in the context of the ratification process of the already signed Armenian-Turkish “Protocols” and the adoption of the resolutions, by the legislators in the United States and Sweden that condemn the Armenian Genocide. In contrast to Germany, which has acknowledged the Jewish Holocaust and, as a partial reparation for its most grave crime committed and as befitting of a civilized European nation, has paid utmost respect to the heirs of the Holocaust victims, the political and military elite of Turkey, on the other hand, does not at all atone for the Armenian Genocide, the Great Dispossession of Homeland, and the extermination of the Armenian Christian civilization. “Tomorrow, if need be, I will say to those 100,000 Armenians who are living in my country illegally: ‘Go to your own country!’ They are not my citizens.” This statement is inappropriate—to say the least—for the leader of a country that is member in the Council of Europe, this can unleash a persecution campaign against national, religious and other communities, and, most importantly, this statement inherently BREEDS NEW GENOCIDES! “The genocide issue must be left for the historians. What do other countries have to do with this matter in the case when Turkey and Armenia are signing protocols on the normalization of relations?” This recent statement made by the PACE President Mr. Cavusoglu attests to the fact that he, too, serves the Turkish state’s policy of denying the Armenian Genocide and, just like the Turkish prime minister, abuses this European organization’s repute and capacity for his personal and petty national ambitions. The existing territory of Turkey encompasses the greater portion of the Armenian highland where the indigenous Armenian people have lived and created for millennia. The Armenian nation’s killing and its Great Dispossession of Homeland at the hands of the Ottoman Empire, which has seized the Armenian heartland, took place in 1915. The generations that came after those Armenians, who had become exiles in the aftermath of the Genocide and the Dispossession, today have formed a large Diaspora-Armenian community comprising around seven million Armenians. I, too, am a descendant of Western Armenians who had miraculously remained alive. The current statistics on the total number of indigenous nations living in Turkey today and at the turn of the past century also show that this Genocide, which also was directed against humanity and civilization, has had its criminal continuation. The leaders of Turkey blackmail and threaten the countries that recognize the Armenian Genocide. The provocation of nationalism poses a serious threat against peaceful regional coexistence. And this nationalism has resulted in the murder of the Istanbul-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink. He was a devoted advocate of democracy, and he openly spoke of that country’s stigma: the Armenian Genocide. This April 24 will mark the 95th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide and the Great National Dispossession organized and carried out by Ottoman Turkey. And I am convinced that the imperative of the day is to erect, in close proximity to the Jewish Holocaust memorial in front of the Council of Europe building, monuments eternalizing the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide and of other genocides. I hereby end my alarm for the Council of Europe with this call: Condemn any and all PACE-member-country leader’s nationalistic statements and, in the light of the Genocide’s approaching 100th anniversary, demand from Turkey that it openly and comprehensively examine its history’s genocidal pages, which have sinned against humanity and civilization”. The letter is addressed to Secretary General of the Council of Europe Mr. Thorbjorn Jagland, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe Mrs. Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, Chair of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe Mrs. Micheline Calmy-Rey, Commissioner for Human Rights Mr. Thomas Hammarberg, President of the Assembly  Mr. Mevlut Cavusoglu, Chairpersons of  Group of the European People's Party Mr. Luca Volonte, Chairpersons of  Socialist Group Mr Andreas Gross, Chairpersons of  Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Mme Anne Brasseur, Chairpersons of European Democrat Group Mr David Wilshire, Chairpersons of Group of the Unified European Left Mr. Tiny Kox, Chairperson of the Political Affairs Committee Mr Björn von Sydow (SOC), Chairperson of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights Mr Christos Pourgourides (EPP/CD), Chairperson of the Committee on Economic Affairs and Development Mr Paul Wille (ALDE), Chairperson of the Social, Health and Family Affairs Committee Mme Liliane Maury Pasquier (SOC), Chairperson of the Committee on Migration, Refugees and Population Mr. John Greenway (EDG), Chairperson of the Committee on Culture, Science and Education Mr. Andrew McIntosh (SOC), Chairperson of the Committee on the Environment, Agriculture and Local and Regional Affairs Mr. Aleksei Lotman (UEL), Chairperson of the Committee on Equal Opportunities for Women and MenMr José Mended Bota (EPP/CD), Chairperson of the Committee on the Honouring of Obligations and Commitments by Member States of the Council of Europe (Monitoring Committee) M.
