Aragatzotn Apricot Crop Suffers 142 Million AMD in Frost Damage

According to preliminary estimates by the Aragatzotn Natural Disasters Inspection Committee, 300 hectares of apricot trees suffered frost damage early this spring in the region, resulting in 142 million AMD in damages. Lyova Mnatsakanyan, Deputy Chief of the Aragatzotn Department of Nature Protection and Agriculture, told Hetq that they were waiting for the fruit to bloom in order to assess the full extent of the damage. "Apricots are a sensitive fruit and frost damage can lead to sudden losses. We will have to be patient and wait out the period when the fruit enters the consolidation stage," he said. When we asked if the government had given any pledges to help local farmers, Mr. Mnatsakanyan answered ‘no’. "We provided figures on the damage to date to the Ministry of Agriculture. But we also don’t expect that any compensation will be forthcoming." The Armavir Regional Administration told us that a committee to assess the frost damage in the region hadn’t yet been assembled and that they were waiting for the ‘go-ahead’ from the top.
